Discover the Delights of Turmeric Latte/ Golden Milk/ Haldi ka Doodh: A Healthful Tradition

Turmeric Latte, known as Haldi ka Doodh or Golden Milk, is not just a trendy beverage; it’s an ancient elixir cherished for its health benefits and vibrant flavors. In just 10 minutes, you can indulge in this caffeine and dairy-free delight, rooted in Ayurvedic tradition.

What is Golden Milk?

Haldi, meaning turmeric, and doodh, meaning milk in Hindi, blend together to create the comforting essence of Haldi Doodh. This golden elixir, also affectionately termed Golden Milk, boasts a warm, earthy profile with hints of spice and citrus, where turmeric reigns as the star ingredient.

Turmeric, a superfood, is a widely used spice in Indian cuisine. We add it to almost everything – be it sweet or savory. I have a blog post where you can read about the benefits of turmeric and how to use it in everyday cooking. Turmeric Milk is one of the most common Indian beverages that’s been made in nearly every household for generations. Turmeric milk to us is like what Chocolate milk is to the West.

It’s also mentioned in Ayurveda and is known for its nutritional benefits. I grew up drinking Haldi wala doodh. Mom believing in the age-old remedy, would give us a glass of warm haldi doodh (made with warm milk + turmeric + sugar) before bedtime so that we could get a good night’s sleep or when any of us would suffer from a cold, cough, sore throat, or fever.

Besides making it plain, you can make a variation of the Lush Turmeric Latte by mixing hot milk with ground turmeric, and other warming spices. Milk brings out the properties of the spices. The combination of these vibrant spices is what makes this hot turmeric drink so enjoyable to drink. This Indian beverage is also called Masala doodh because of the spices added to it.

In today’s world, people everywhere are talking about how good turmeric is for your health and how great turmeric lattes are. But did you know that our ancestors already knew about this? Yep, turmeric lattes have been a big deal in Indian homes for a long time.

And let’s not forget how yummy it is! Turmeric lattes have this sweet and a little spicy taste that just makes you feel all warm and cozy inside.

So, while everyone’s jumping on the turmeric latte bandwagon now, it’s cool to know that it’s been a favorite in Indian homes for ages. Our ancestors knew what they were doing when they made this delicious and healthy drink!

How to Make

  1. Add milk to a pot.
  2. Add sugar, turmeric powder, ginger powder, ground cloves, cardamom powder, ground nutmeg, and cinnamon powder. Chef Tip – Do not add turmeric more than mentioned. The latte can taste bitter.
  3. Whisk it all together till all the spices have blended well with the milk. There should be no lumps. Cook on a simmer and then turn off the gas at the first boil.
  4. Chef tip – This could take 5-6 minutes on medium flame. Boiling milk makes it easier to digest. Then add the vanilla extract. Mix. Strain the milk using a fine strainer or cheesecloth if you don’t want a grainy texture in the mouth when you drink it.
  5. Pour in serving glasses, and top it with freshly crushed black pepper, and saffron strands. Use a milk frother if desired.
